Are you discouraged by the world? Are you struggling to keep your faith in humanity?

It’s easy to fall into despair when observing the violence, war, racism, bigotry, weaponizing religion, and the creeping fascism in the United States. Why is it so difficult to explain why we should care about others? When will humanity evolve into a species that thrives on empathy, compassion, and love?

I don’t have the answers and I wish I had a time frame. However, I do know that we are likely not to see the changes we want to see in our lifetime. Achieving collective liberation may take hundreds or thousands of years, but I believe we do get there. Humanity will be liberated in a new earth that will seem worlds away from our current one.

This may be difficult to believe, yet to plead my case, may we zoom out.

The Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The earliest life form emerged approximately 3.7 billion years ago. Humans emerged approximately 300,000 years ago.

We are a baby species. We know very little and are only now beginning to understand the world around us, thanks to technology. Therefore, who will we be in one hundred years? One thousand years? Ten thousand years?

If evolution is the necessary process to ensure the survival of a species, then humans must evolve to survive. If humans devolve into more violence, war, hate, greed, and weaponized religion, we will not survive. There is a possibility that humans don’t survive. Perhaps we create our extinction. However, I see evidence all around me of humans evolving in ways that will ensure our survival.

We must focus on the progress humans have made toward collective and individual liberation. Humans are waking up. We are slowly dismantling white supremacy, colonization, and toxic religion. We are fighting for the marginalized in ways our ancestors couldn’t. We have power. We have collective power and we will become humanity’s highest potential.

You and I may not see the outcome of our commitment to hope, change, and liberation, but we don’t need to see it to imagine it and believe it.
